In Search of "We the People"

Whatever happened to “We the People”? In today’s political and cultural atmosphere, it seems there’s no room for the fundamental rights we should enjoy as Americans. How quickly we have set aside those rights, all for the sake of fear, ignorance and even convenience. We have chosen to follow like sheep into a system of authoritarian control from which there may be no escape. You know what I’m talking about:
We the People have become so afraid of a virus that we have suspended our lives and our livelihoods. We gave in even though we have known since the beginning that the virus has less chance of killing most people than the seasonal ‘flu. What started as a short-term effort to “flatten the curve” seems to have become a long-term effort to “flatten the country.”
To the detriment of our children’s mental health, and in spite of medical pleas to the contrary, we closed our schools. We “followed the (dubious) science” and allowed our churches and businesses to be closed for way too long. We let power-drunk demagogues tell us we could not visit, touch, or even see our relatives and friends in hospitals and nursing homes. We continue to submit to mask mandates and social distancing rules that are inconsistent and arbitrary – and which never seem to apply to those who make the rules.
We the People succumb to the anger and frustration of pointless political arguments with fringe elements, while leaving our basic human rights in the hands of those same people – just because they have control of the narrative. We seem to believe in that narrative, and what we hear on the media, because we have forgotten how to think for ourselves, and are too lazy or too stupid to do our own research.
And then there is the jab. It’s a huge experiment in controlling the masses, and a huge financial boon to big Pharma. Those in power know that if they can make us afraid or ashamed, they will get paid, and We the People will give up our right to medical and personal privacy. We give in to the pressure to accept an experimental injection, whether we need it or not. Doesn’t it strike you as strange that those who rant against GMOs and hormones in beef are blithely lining up to get injected with an experimental genetically-modified substance, which is not even approved by the FDA? Power, it seems, is more appealing than principles.
Big Tech and the national leaders that bow to their power think so little of We the People that they choose intimidation and shaming rather than allowing the free flow of ideas. Apparently you are too dense to think for yourself, or to decide what’s true and what’s false. It’s up to millennial flunkies at Facebook or Twitter to decide what you should see and hear and say. This isn’t new. Hollywood has been pulling this kind of trick for decades. What is new is the extent of the propaganda and the level of apathy, as if ignoring the problems will make them go away.
Our authority as parents is under attack. Teachers, activists, and administrators pushing Critical Race Theory and other Marxist ideologies do so with the underlying assumption that they know better how to raise your kids than you do. School is supposed to be for learning, not for indoctrination. And it’s not just political. We the People are letting ideologue teachers decide what and when our kids learn about sex. Children are being hustled into hormone therapy without parental approval, just because some school hack thinks they “identify” as something other than they really are. This is a direct attack on the rights of parents and the primacy of the family as the building block of a reasonable society.
Your role as a patriot, a member of a community once known proudly as the United States of America, is also under attack. Current political leaders speak with open disdain for We the People who disagree with them. Who voted for these rude demagogues? Dead people? Whatever happened to civil discourse in the public square? Legislative overreach on the part of our elected officials, from school boards to the U.S. Congress, demonstrates massive disrespect for those who put them in office in the first place. We the People are being ignored, manipulated, threatened, canceled, and bamboozled out of our rights.
I’ll ask it again, “Whatever happened to ‘We the People’?” Obviously, we need to guard our rights and those of our neighbors. We need to tell the truth in the face of falsehood. We need to expose lies and dishonesty where we find them. We must be good citizens, not ideological sheep. Our system is robust, and our Constitution has stood the test of time, so we can take a stand based on those things.
Ultimately, though, the answers don’t lie in the Constitution or the courts. Those solutions are temporary and temporal. What we need is hope, which only comes from God.
The hope we claim is both permanent and eternal. It is available to all who turn to Jesus, and it can’t be shaken by worldly problems. God’s people have a unique opportunity in times like these. When others are confused and afraid, Christians can offer peace and comfort from God’s Word. That’s got to be our job. Stand firm, and tell the truth about the hope that is in us.
That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe. (1 Timothy 4:10)
Before He went to be crucified, Jesus said to His followers, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
Take heart, friend.
Standing with you,
Carolyn
